Wander Franco Controversy

Major League Baseball is investigating social media posts featuring Tampa Bay shorthand Wander Franco, a 22-year-old All-Star who didn’t hit before the Rays’ Giants streak. The group flew to San Francisco. “During today’s game, we became aware of a social media post about Ranger Franco,” the Rays said on Sunday. “We take this incident very seriously and are in close contact with Major League Baseball to do due diligence.”

Tampa Bay did not elaborate on the nature of the publication.

Wander Franco may be placed on a restricted list or placed under administrative control while MLB investigates social media posts to verify information. The Rays declined to comment when asked if Franco wasn’t on the team’s plane.

Wander Franco, who didn’t play in Sunday’s game against Cleveland, was in the Rays bunker at the start of the game and then left in fifth place. He did not speak to the media after Tampa Bay’s 9-2 loss.

Sunday’s Tropicana Field promotion is a Franco snap cap for fans 14 and under.

After the game, Rays head coach Kevin Cash was asked if he had a problem with Franco not playing outside of his day off.
Money replied: “No.” “I know that feeling and I’m not going to talk about it anymore,” said.

Money. “A day off because [it’s] a day off.”

The Rays selected Osleivis Basabe as the central defender in their major league debut. Basabe, who went 3 to 1 and doubled, learned Saturday night that he was injured against Triple-A Durham.

Players on the restricted list are removed from the roster and are usually not paid, and teams use the list for a variety of reasons: drug treatment, arrests, non-disclosure, visa issues, and handling various issues related to the player’s request.

Former Los Angeles Dodgers player Trevor Ball, who resigned as the organization investigated family allegations against him, was dropped from the roster but paid for it. The MLB and MLB Players Association must agree to put the player on administrative leave.
